Guests Cellar Door @ Kinloch Wines

– Make it a date –Saturday 3rd December !

Kinloch Wines will open their cellar door to four wine labels in the region, inviting them to showcase their varietal wines in a magnificent garden setting.  This will happen on Saturday 3rd December 11.00 am to 4.00pm.  As these four wineries do not have permanent cellar doors, this is a perfect opportunity for you, the wine lover to come along and sample aromatic white and elegant red wines from Barwite Vineyard, Mt Samaria, Ros Ritchie and St Winifred’s. Of course, Kinloch Wines will also be thrown in among the mix. What’s more you can talk to the “faces behind the labels” – Meet Bryan & Timo, Judy & Roger, Ros & John, Cait & Peter and Susan and Malcolm.  All passionate about their journey in wine and have stories to tell about their achievements.  Ros Ritchie Wines was launched 3 years ago and Ros has five carefully crafted wines made with skill and passion –she is renowned for making great Gewürztraminer and her Pinot Gris is also a must try.  Barwite has always done well with their Reisling winning many awards along the way. If you like the traditional Shiraz which is spicy and peppery with ripe berry characteristics, then the Mt Samaria Shiraz is for you. Their Tempranillo (a Spanish variety) is also a must try. Cait from St Winifred’s makes small parcels of wine and has a Riesling and Pinot Noir among her mix – a true “hobby” winemaker of great skill.  Among the many varieties of the Kinloch range, the must try is their recent 2011 Sauvignon Blanc and a “must” purchase for your Christmas table is their Best in State 2008 Don Kinloch Sparkling white. You are invited to come along and sample these exciting wines, purchase a glass or a bottle, and settle down for the afternoon, and then place your orders for future consumption.  Special Christmas packs will also be available so don’t miss out on this wonderful opportunity. It is a date – Saturday 3rd December from 11.00 am to 4.00 pm.  For further information call Susan Kinloch on 5777 3447. (Kinloch Wines, 221 Wairere Rd, Boorolite – a 15 minute drive from Mansfield).

Our Wine Dinner at Rennies - A Great Success

A magnificent setting and venue - Rennies at Acheron, Restaurant and Gallery was the perfect place for our Kinloch Wines Degustation Dinner which was held on Saturday 15th October.  Thank you to Marian Rennie and her staff for a well planned event.  Her chef Said (Sayed) (originally from Eygpt) designed a superb 5 course degustation menu - his mediteranean-french aromas and condiments were delicately matched to our wines and our guests were totally sated.  Guests were greeted with a glass of our Best in State 2008 Don Kinloch Sparkling white served with an eggplant-zuchinni dip topped with labna cheese-yoghurt placed on a toasted crostini.  The first course was Lamb tagine with preserved lemon and house olives paired off with our 2011 Sauvignon Blanc; second course was local Atlantic Salmon and Marina Broth served with our 2009 Chardonnay and 2009 Wild Ferment Chardonnay - both wines had their unique style.  Third course was Rabbit with artichoke & tomato herbed sauce matched to our 2010 Pinot Noir.  The main course was Pressed Duck breast grilled with light egetables and red wine jus paired off with 2010 Pinot Meunier and 2006 Mary Friend Bordeaux Blend.  Wow what an experience - true to our slogan - it's not just about wine...it's about the experience!.  The final course was dessert of course... and this was simply Figs filled with caramelised cherries and minted fruit salsa served wit our 2010 Late Harvest Riesling.  Just the dessert to finish the evening. Well done to Rennies and thanks to our lovely guests who came along and supported our wine dinner.

A PLEASANT SURPRISE AT THE YARCK PUB

About our Pinot Meunier

The above article appeared in the North by North East Magazine - August edition.
If you are in and around Mansfield try our Pinot Meunier at the Yarck Pub; the Deck on High, Mansfield and the Hunt Club in Merrijig

Learn about Pinot Meunier

Pinot Meunier is a variety of black wine grape most frequently used in the production of Champagne and gets its name and synonyms (French meunier - meaning miller) from flour-like dusty white down on the underside of its leaves.

Where It Grows It can be found as a varietal in Oregon, British Columbia, Germany and Australia

Wine CharacteristicsPinot Meunier is a mutation of Pinot Noir. It can make an enjoyable dry red wine, like a more fruity and rustic Pinot Noir. It has the great advantage of budding late and ripening early, thus avoiding frost in spring and rain in autumn...

Descriptive Flavors
Cherry
Spice - Nutmeg
Forest Floor

Keep It or Drink It
Pinot Meunier is ready to serve when it is sold however can be cellared for up to 5 years when the wine softens and takes on a different complexity.

Food Combinations
The beauty of Pinot Meunier is that its medium weight allows it to be enjoyed as a lunch time red or a pre-dinner red. It should be enjoyed with cheese, sweetmeats and crusty bread or gamey dishes. It is a wine that will surprise and delight.

DO TRY IT....

A Pleasant Surprise at the Yarck Pub

While dining out, Ian Dunn rediscovered a type of wine that brought back fond memories!  At the Yarck pub on a recent cold and wet night with good food ordered and anticipated, I made my customary inspection of the red wines on offer.  To my amazement, there was a Pinot Meunier.   A Pinot Meunier at Yarck! You've got to be kidding I thought!

To read more about Ian's discovery and taste of our Pinot Meunier get a copy of the August edition of the North by North East Magazine - Cost $4.50 at your local news agent or call Lynnda Heard on 0407103035 and she will send you a copy. Our Wild Ferment Chardonnay 2009

When Susan and Malcolm sought a tree change and moved to Booroolite near Mansfield to set up a small family vineyard, they didn’t anticipate they would quickly establish an enviable reputation for quality wines. Leaving wine to ferment naturally with wild airborne yeast is risky at best, but the results can produce some amazing flavours, as this one has. It’s an absolute delight with a full and rich palate weight and delightfully creamy texture. Every glass can be enjoyed without the overstated buttery character one gets with barrel fermented chardy’s. It will keep for years and is well worth the $34 price tag. Look out for more Kinloch wines in the coming weeks.  Alex Berry - freelance wine critic

New Releases at Kinloch

NEW RELEASES
Since our last newsletter we have the following new vintages to tempt you with; some of you have already visited our cellar door and tasted and purchased, whilst some of our wine club members have been sent these wines with their annual delivery.  For those of you who have not had the opportunity as yet – these wines are exceptional for “everyday” drinking and the three reds can also be put down in your cellar for enjoyment at a later time.
2010 Pinot Noir: This vintage is a soft and easy drinking style, full of cherry and spicy nutmeg flavours emanating partly from the use of French oak fermentation. Fresh and ready to drink and will complement game dishes and light meals. Drink now or cellar till 2015.
2010 Pinot Meunier: A French grape variety grown in the Champagne regions of France for the making of champagne. This medium-bodied wine shows attractive Italian characteristics, with aromas and flavours of beetroot, tobacco leaf and tar. Combined with soft furry tannins, it is a well-balanced wine with good ageing potential. Drink now or cellar to 2016.
2006 “Mary Friend” Bordeaux Blend: (James Halliday Rating 91). Maturing in a combination French and Russian oak barriques for 22 months, this wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (44%), Merlot (31%) and Cabernet Franc (25%). It is of medium weight and elegant and will reward cellaring for up to ten years. A subtle herbal tone with fruit flavours of red grapes and mulberries enhances the palate.  A chocolate-coffee after taste makes it intriguingly delightful. “Mary Friend, born 1872 in Landsborough, Vic, was Grandmother to Malcolm Kinloch”
(Our 2004 vintage of this same blend of wine won GOLD at the Federation Sq Showcase Series 2008 and was also adjudged the Overall Best Red Blend in its class at the Award presentation for the Victorian Wine Awards that year).
2011 Sauvignon Blanc: Previous vintages of our Sauvignon Blanc have been very popular among our cellar door visitors and are a best seller at local restaurants – The Deck on High, Mansfield, the Tea Rooms of Yarck and Rinaldo’s in Wangaratta. The 2011 vintage is true to our cool climate conditions and releases fragrances of asparagus and boxwood overtones; you can savour the crisp sweet and sour after-taste of golden kiwifruit, and enjoy the delicious freshness and intensity of all these flavours. Drink now or cellar till 2013.

Non- Wine Club Members Special
Our Six-Pack Special to NON-WINE CLUB members: Grab it soon - 2010 Un-oaked Chardonnay just $80 for a 6-pack. Wine Review: “This would be considered the foremost table wine variety from the Kinloch stable. The cool climate plays a major role in the making of these premium wines. This has been handcrafted by Malcolm Kinloch and has good weight and richness on the palate while still showing flavours in the crisp stone fruit, citrus and melon spectrum. There is a creamy mouth feel on the finish and hints of nutty almond. The wine is underpriced at $15 and will not need analysing to enjoy it; simply open, pour and sip while the sun goes down with a plate of dried fruits, antipasto or chicken”. Alex Berry

2008 Merlot gets a wrap!

A Review
Freelance wine writer and educator, Alex Berry recently reviewed our 2008 Merlot and this is what he has to say –“I’m very pleased to see that Kinloch has received a four-star rating in the Australian Wine Companion – it’s well deserved. From a small patch of land in the cool hills of Mansfield, Malcolm and Susan have carved out a tree-change lifestyle to envy. Their wines are fabulous and deserve every accolade they get. It’s all hands-on with everything handpicked. This 2008 merlot is a drink now style. Full of ripe berry fruits of strawberry and plum with hints of cherries on the palate, the soft tannins allow you to take in the delicate flavours of the wine and don’t dominate the finish, allowing you to enjoy the delightful wine. They are only a short drive from Mansfield and welcome all visitors to their cellar door.”

UPPR GOULBURN WINE REGION LONG LUNCH

Our Chefs and Regional Wines Star at Upper Goulburn Annual Long Lunch

By Susan Kinloch

Our Chefs and Regional Wines Star at Upper Goulburn Annual Long Lunch

By Susan Kinloch

The Upper Goulburn Winegrowers’ Annual Long Lunch showcasing the region’s best in culinary expertise was bursting with great food, exciting, quality wines to match each dish, surprise dinner auctions and fantastic entertainment.  Our region’s wines and food operators came together as one to showcase the region’s best at the Upper Goulburn Long Lunch.  The lunch was held at the Mansfield Showground’s Edward Harris Pavilion on Sunday May 15th.  Delighted guests assembled for pre-luncheon wines from local winemakers served with delicious canapés prepared by Ben Browning from Benjamins Restaurant at the Golf Club.  A selection of hors-d’oeuvres using regional Buxton trout, vine-ripened tomatoes and organic chicken matched to a sample of Upper Goulburn sparkling and lighter style wines excited the palates and kick-started what was to follow.  The Pavilion was decked out magnificently to receive guests to a sit-down three course luncheon, matched expertly with the right wines from the region.   A fully equipped Crawford Kitchen was on site and the show began.  The menu was designed around autumnal flavours and the slow cooked movement. Christian Bergmoser from  Magnolia Catering, served up his Loin of Yarck venison, wrapped in prosciutto, slow roasted pink, served with a trio of jelly (two chosen wines, and rosemary), garnished with a brunoise of dried local olives paired off with 2008 Barwite Pinot Noir & 2010 Ros Ritchie Pinot Gris.  Megan Knapp, Pure Taste and Gill Belle, Mansfield Regional Produce Store tempted diners with their alternate drop, giving guests the opportunity to switch or share - Twiced-cooked Berkshire pork with sour cherry glaze, sautéed celery, cabbage and braised root vegetables OR Braised brisket of beef with red wine, spiced plum, bay leaf and Autumnal vegetables of silver beet, parsnip and carrot. The Kinloch 2010 Pinot Meunier matched so well with the pork and Sedona Estate 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon went delightfully with the slow-cooked beef. Conversations were lively, but alas short once Tenor Robert Barbaro burst into song, superbly accompanied on the keyboard by Director of More than Opera, David Kram. Robert brought the “shed” down with his Lanza like - Italianate voice - encore after encore was not rejected and the guests fully sated all round, with good wine, good food and song!     Just before entrée, Gary Hubbard our auctioneer stirred the crowd as he used his craft to auction off two separate dinners for 12, to be designed and prepared by chefs Christian Bergmoser and Megan Knapp. Bidding was fierce among competing sections of the shed and the final gavel announcing the two winners, Sandra Glue and Ken Hall.  Dessert was then served by the Deck on High’s Michael Nelson who served up a treat as the final dish, which was a tasting plate of Belgian couverture chocolate terrine; spiced hazelnut baklava; poached gewürztraminer figs on frangipani biscuit with Indian fairy-floss. This was matched to the 2008 Delatite late-harvest Gewurztraminer. Master of Ceremonies, Malcolm Kinloch then invited chefs and winemakers to talk about their respective dishes and wines, invited questions from the floor, more wine, more lively conversation and sadly the afternoon came to an end, but not before savouring mini citrus tarts from All
Things Tea with tea and coffee! See you next year – Sunday 29th April 2012.

Small Parcel

Yes yesterday we harvested a very small parcel of our Reisling - not sure what we will do with this one - make a small parcel of a straight resiling for our friends, family and loyal customers no doubt. That is is it for our 2011 harvest.  I guess the good part is that we can take a longer break before pruning begins and dont we deserve it!  Our first harvest of Reisling was in 2010 and we experimented with making a late-harvest style - this is superb.  lovely almond, nutty, honey flavours coming through and will go well with any chocolate or perhaps some berries and ice-cream.  We do still have some of this to sell. visit www.kinlochwines.com.au

Harvest - What was left of it!!

This morning we harvested our Sauvignon Blanc - not much fruit but the taste was sensational. We are very proud of our vintages thus far of our Sauvignon Blanc - our current 2010 vintage won Silver at the Victorian Wine Show 2010.  Three medals were awarded - one Gold and two Silver - so we were absolutely stoked to be among the elite.  Let's hope our 2011 vintage will go places too.  This is not your NZ style - it is our own Kinloch style.  Lots of aromatic flavours of lime, lychee and citrus and perfectly balanced acidity with the fruit.  Where can you taste it?  At the cellar door of course - at the Deck on High in Mansfield - at the Tea Rooms of Yarck - the Mill Inn in Mansfield, the Mansfield Regional Produce Store and the Savage Club in Melbourne.  Retail Outlets for this exciting wine :  East Melbourne General Store, Red White & Amber in Hawthorn; Marks IGA and Foodworks in Mansfield.  Do try it!

Australian Story

Malcolm Kinloch, Vigneron, Upper Goulburn

Malcolm Kinloch Vigneron Upper Goulburn Story by Kinloch Wines

Not only a change in attitude but also a change in altitude saw corporate high-flyer Malcom Kinloch take on a new challenge in regional Victoria.
In the late 1990s Malcolm swapped his business suit for a pair of pruning shears and leather gloves, becoming viticulturalist on his own property nestled alongside Australia's Great Dividing Range.
The snowfields of Mt Buller lie to the east giving way to grazing land in the west, and situated half way between at 400 metres above sea level is Kinloch Wines.
This picturesque property boasts a converted hay barn as its cellar door, and is the weekend hub for locals and friends to gather - food and wine is enjoyed by all and great conversation flows easily.

We are pleased to inform our customers that you can dine at Watermarc in Wangaratta with a Kinloch Pinot Noir or Chardonnay. Both quality cool climate styles that will excite the pallate. My friend Sue Crow and I lunched at Watermarc last week and enjoyed their pizzas - just sufficient for a light lunch and washed it down with an interesting Pinot Gris from the King Valley.http://www.kinlochwines.com.au/
