Well, what better way to celebrate Cup Day but with friends at the country races!  After a busy few days at the cellar door Malcolm and I spent Cup Day at the Mansfield Races with friends.  Enjoyed a bet or two or three....came home winners,,and also backed Green Moon.  Go you good thing!

An afternoon with Blake Fischer - The Australian Tenor

We hosted our annual pre Melbourne Cup Luncheon on the Monday 5th November where Blake Fischer, the Australian Tenor performed.  Guests were in awe of his voice and talent and the afternoon was just superb.  A surprise was thrown in also when his wife Rebecca Carrier sang...wow what a voice!  So powerful that she did not need the mic.  Delicious food prepared by chef Michael Beltrame from the Mill Inn in Merrijig and his assistants Pali and Munji...plenty of wine the most popular on the day being our Don Kinloch Sparkling made to the true French method.  What better way to celebrate the Melbourne Cup Carnival.  Everyone was a winner.  Thanks to all are wonderful support base, friends, customers and visitors who came along to help make the day a huge success.

It's Time....

It’s time
Yes, there comes a time in everyone’s life when retirement beckons!  We thought that this was what we were doing when we bought our property in 1996 and started out what was to be a lifestyle change, just running a retirement hobby-business; something to keep us sufficiently busy, yeah, so we thought!.
But, now 16 years down the track who would have thought that Kinloch Wines would be what it is today – a popular tourism business in the high country, Mansfield where many come to enjoy our wines, our food, meet and greet friends, be entertained, enjoy the vista and the spirit of warmth and homeliness! (Not to mention the many accolades our wines have achieved).  Well, this time we have decided to fully retire!!  As you know, both of us have had recent health issues and this has played a strong part in our decision to “take it easy”.
There is a strong desire to celebrate the next phase with some travel, as well as enjoy time with our families, hence the need to phase out of the industry, and to this end we have placed an 18 month timeline to do just this.
Wine production has ceased however we will be running our cellar door and wine club operations until such time as we exhaust our existing vintages of wine.
We have enjoyed our journey and achieved so much and met so many wonderful people along the way - most have now become good friends.  Thank you for supporting our boutique label, our cellar door events and for drinking our wine. We encourage you to visit the cellar door in the near months for that last drink  before we close all operations forever.
Best wishes
Susan & Malcolm

James Halliday Reviews and Ratings

In the 90’s ….
James Halliday  Review & Ratings
We continue to get good ratings by wine aficionado James Halliday and we are thrilled!  His 2013 wine companion will be out in August. www.winecompanion.com.au
2010 Pinot Meunier – Rating 90
Light, bright, clear crimson-purple; a very good attempt at table wine with this variety; spicy, savoury nuances do not come over the top of the red fruits (cherry, strawberry and raspberry) at its core.
2006 Mary Friend Premium Bordeaux Blend – Rating 91
A distinctly savoury complexity runs through the wine, impacting on the array of red and black berry fruits of both bouquet and palate, the latter supported by fine tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot/Cabernet Franc.
2010 Pinot Noir – Rating 92
Very good, bright purple-crimson; a well-made, light-bodied pinot with strong varietal expression on both bouquet and palate; red and black cherry with some spice and French oak nuances are the drivers of a well-priced wine.
2011 Sauvignon Blanc – Rating 93
Pale straw-green; has a highly expressive bouquet and an equally intense palate, both with a virtuoso display of blossom, herb, citrus, asparagus and gooseberry; a hint of sweetness on the finish adds to the pleasure of the wine. This wine received a Silver Medal at the  Federation Sq Regional Showcase  held in April and is now eligible  for entry to the Victorian Annual Awards to be held in August. Another win

Wined and Dined!

Chef Michael Beltrame at the Mill Inn in Merrijig did it again!.  His second “meet the maker” wine dinner and this one to welcome our winter season was held on Friday 1 June.  The cold night certainly did not dampen the 70 guests who had booked in advance so as not to have missed such a wonderful foodie and winey occasion.  Michael, together with Susan and Malcolm from Kinloch Wines showcased a winter menu paired off with the best wines from the Kinloch estate.  The atmosphere was warm and inviting and guests ready to learn and savour everything put in front of them.  On arrival guests were treated to the 2008 Don Kinloch Sparkling white served with Michael’s Goat cheese and kalamata fried ravioli; Prawn fritto with fresh lime and caper mayonnaise; and Beetroot and vodka salmon gravlax.  The fire place was roaring and so were the guests with sounds of greetings, laughter and conversation.  Four courses followed with the selected wines to complement and were preceded by Michael’s explanations of “how” and “why” and Malcolm’s address on the characteristics of each wine and the art of appreciating wine.  Potato gnocchi tossed with smoked salmon, spinach and cream with the Kinloch 2009 Chardonnay was the teaser to what was to follow.  The Kinloch 2010 Pinot Meunier which is not your run of the mill (pardon the pun) wines and is now on the Mill Inn’s wine list is a delightful drop.  Full of savoury notes and cherry and spice went so well with Michael’s grilled cotechino sausage with baked polenta and radicchio salad. Michael was showing off his Italian heritage here with one of his Mum’s favourite dishes.  The Italian theme continued into the main dish which was an olive oil infused rump on a braised artichoke heart with white bean fritter and red wine reduction.  Now this was paired off with the new release Kinloch 2006 Mary Friend Bordeaux blend… a superb red wine made from blended grapes of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, (named Mary Friend after Malcolm’s late grandmother). A great combination of tastes and the appreciation of what was presented to the guests were shown by their expressions of “oohs and aahhs”, their lively conversation and general enthusiasm for the enjoyment of delicious food and fine wine!  A winter pudding followed to end this vinous-food indulgence - a sticky fig almond pudding with burnt orange caramel sauce and orange wafer matched with the Kinloch 2010 Late-picked Riesling.  What a yummy ending!  Michael’s menu was expertly designed for a winter dining experience which complemented not only the selected wines but his Italian upbringing.  The Mill Inn’s next “meet the maker” wine dinner will be held in September showcasing wines from Gapstead.
